Troop 11 Winter Campout Registration: Guadalupe Peak/Carlsbad Caverns

Troop 11's Winter Campout: Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad Caverns

All Troop 11 scouts and adult leaders who want to attend must register using this Eventbrite.

Registration opens on November 6 and closes on November 13, 2017. The price is $400 for scouts and adults.

When: Survey says...January 2 to January 7, 2018

Where: Road trip to Guadalupe Mountains National Park in west Texas and Carlsbad Caverns National Park in southeast New Mexico

Who: This is a hiking and backpacking campout in winter weather. All campers should be in condition to complete an ascent of Guadalupe Peak, the "Top of Texas." The trail is a very strenuous 8½ mile hike with a 3,000 foot elevation gain - but our hikers can take day packs. It will take from 6 to 8 hours to complete the round trip which we will undertake in one day. We will also be backpacking with full packs into the backcountry of Guadalupe Mountains National Park with a possible 9 mile hike to a campsite and then a nine mile hike out. An alternative to the backcountry hike would be day hikes on the Devil's Hall Trail and the Bear Canyon Trail while sleeping at base camp. We will then travel together to the close-by Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico and take a ranger-guided tour of the deep caves.

Average temperatures in Guadalupe Mountain National Park on these dates in January are highs of 58° and lows of 24°.

This campout is part of the Troop's preparation for Philmont 2018. Registration may be limited. Priority will be given in the order of sign-ups on the survey.

Our current plan:

Thursday, January 4: Backpack into Guadalupe Mountains backcountryand camp at the Blue Ridge Backcountry Campground OR Day hiking in GMNP and camp at Pine Springs Group Campsite
